Yurts

A Mongolian yurt (or ger) is the traditional portable home of the nomadic peoples of Central Asia. A simple design of a lattice wall connected to a central crown wheel by wooden spokes, covered by canvas and felt to ensures it is snug and warm and able to withstand the elements. The crown wheel lets plenty of light in through the top of the yurt and is supported by two wooden posts painted with traditional designs. A double door gives access to the outside world and the wide open spaces of Summerhill.

Our yurts are genuine Mongolian yurts, furnished to give a cosy, rustic feel with comfortable beds, rugs, cushions, chairs and storage. All this surrounds a central wood burning stove that helps keep the yurt warm and snug. The yurt will sleep 4 to 6 people, ideal for a family or complete luxury for a couple. Each yurt is positioned in its own secluded spot with plenty of space and privacy and has its own outdoor seating area with barbeque facilities. back to top

Bell tents

Bell tents are a classic styled tent of a wooden pole canvas all firmly fixed with guy ropes. Our bell tents can comfortably sleep up to four people and are furnished with comfy beds, rugs and cushions. Each bell tent is positioned in its own spacious, level pitch with its own barbeque and fire pit.

Facilities

Close by to the yurts we have the barn which is equipped with toilets and a shower. Hot water is provided by solar panels on the barn roof which also generates the electricity for the barn. More about the solar power can be found on the farm page.

We provide a fully equipped kitchen and each yurt has its own fridge allocated.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a snug room with a wood burner, sofas and chairs where you can relax and unwind. Here you will find information about the farm, surrounding area, things to do and see and can browse our collection of maps and guides to help plan local walks and excursions.

The kitchen opens out onto the farm garden with a wild flower lawn surrounded by raised beds. This area provides a picnic area with tables and chairs, an ideal spot for a cooked breakfast or evening meal. The garden also incorporates the kitchen garden where we grow a range of vegetables available from the farm larder.

The farm larder is stocked with all the essentials and a bit more. We have home grown and locally sourced organic produce available to suit your culinary requirements. If you need something we don't have, give us a shout.

Hampers for campers

There is no better way to get your stay off to a good start than having a selection of top quality organic produce waiting for you on arrival. Crammed with essentials to keep you going and treats to make the holiday special, each hamper provides a mix of milk, bread, fruit juice, eggs, meat and veg, conserves and more, all home grown or sourced locally. A chilled bottle of wine or some local real ale, whatever your preference, we can make up a hamper to suit your specific requirements. back to top

Enjoy the farm

Grab a stick and roam free and explore the farm. Follow the farm trail down to the river, along the old drovers road and discover the farm's wildlife, an abundance of wild flowers, grand old oak trees, butterflies and birds. There are plenty of quiet spots ideal for a picnic or just to take a breather in the long grass. Meet the cows and their calves, sheep and other animals on the farm. If you want to get involved you can help collect the eggs or herd the geese. There is always something going on.

Things to do and see

Devon has got plenty to offer and we are situated right in the middle of Devon, not far from the A30 between Exeter and Okehampton on the Two Moors Way.

The northern edge of Dartmoor is close by, great for hiking, horse riding, cycling or just exploring the dramatic landscape of the moor. Local attractions include Castle Drogo (National Trust), Fingle Bridge and the market town of Chagford.

Exeter is only 15 miles east and has plenty to offer including the cathedral and historic quayside. Haldon forest park close to Exeter offers forest walks, mountain biking and the Go Ape hire wire forest adventure.

There are plenty of pubs and places to eat nearby, we are happy to recommend our favourites. We also keep a supply of maps and leaflets in the barn to help you decide what to do and places to go. back to top
